Only an hour from either Fredericton or Miramichi City, this quiet, beautiful
village of 986 inhabitants may be just the place for you and your family. The
heart of salmon angling territory, Doaktown is home to many outfitters and
guides, as well as the Miramichi Atlantic Salmon Museum.
Recreation
The Doaktown Arena is the centre of most activity in the area. It houses a youth
centre that offers dances and more for kids of school age. There are also
meeting rooms and a canteen.
Everyone in Doaktown enjoys winter. They play hockey, they skate, they use the
NB Trails for snowmobiling, cross country skiing, and hiking. For the avid
downhill skier, Crabbe Mountain and Poley Mountain are both less than an hour
and a half away. Every year the village puts on a winter carnival. You'll also
find sleigh rides all winter long.
In the summer and fall, special events such as the annual week-long community
fair, an annual tradeshow, and a farmers market are held in the village.
Basketball courts, two ball diamonds, and a nine-hole golf course keep many
people busy, while walking trails, fishing, canoeing, boating, and hunting take
care of the rest of the population. The area fitness centre is also a popular
facility.
Employment
JD Irving is the major employer, with a sawmill, woodlands, and the newly built
White Pine Value Added Centre. These three industries provide work for more than
two hundred people. Residents of Doaktown also work seasonally in the fishing
and lumber industries. Some residents travel to Fredericton to work while others
head to Blackville to work in the mill there.
