The capital of New Brunswick, this serene and pristinely beautiful city situated
on a broad sweep of the St. John River has all the amenities of a large
metropolitan area, and all the warmth and charm of a small town. With a
population of 48,000, it has one of the lowest crime rates provincially and
nationally.
Fredericton is located on the Trans Canada corridor only one hour from the U.S.
Interstate 95. Within the city itself, traffic jams are virtually unheard of,
and most Frederictonians commute to work in less than 10 minutes.
The city is a hive of activity for three levels of government - federal,
provincial and municipal - and two thriving universities. Fredericton is also
home to the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design and a leading digital
training program at the New Brunswick Community College - Fredericton.
Designated as one of the ten smartest cities to do business in a Globe and Mail
survey and named one of Canada's leading export cities, Fredericton boasts the
fastest growing high-tech sector in the Maritimes, and is one of the highest per
capita income locations in Canada.
The city's workforce is highly educated, with a good percentage of bilingual
citizens.
Recreation
Recreation includes historic buildings, galleries, museums, the Playhouse
Theatre, a farmers' market, an annual jazz festival, a children's science
centre, fine dining. Fredericton has all the big city pluses yet maintains the
comfort, friendliness and sense of community found in a small town. In fact, it
has cultural amenities not normally found in a city of its size.
Downhill skiing is just 30 minutes away in winter and in summer golfers in
Fredericton can be on the links just minutes from leaving their office - at
popular and active Fredericton Golf and Curling Club, the new and breathtakingly
beautiful Kingswood Golf Course, or at several smaller courses located within
minutes of downtown.
Over 60 kilometres of walking trails crisscross the city and follow the course
of the St. John River. Sections of the trails are groomed for cross-country
skiing in winter. Fredericton exceeds national standards for per capita
provision of parks and recreation areas, with 1,129 acres of parkland, from the
forested splendor of Odell Park to playgrounds, indoor and outdoor tennis
courts, a skateboarding facility, arenas, and more.
