"Canada's Model Town" has a population of 9,325 and is located just outside the
provincial capital of Fredericton. Oromocto is home to many of the service
personnel from CFB Gagetown (the largest military training area in the British
Commonwealth).
Recreation
There is always something happening in Oromocto, from Pioneer Days, to track and
field meets to craft sales.
The town's recreation department has programs for every interest and level, such
as judo, teen dances, first aid, aerobics, guitar, paintball, quilting and aqua
fitness. The town also boasts an arena, community centre, beautifully landscaped
parks, walking trails, a Ducks Unlimited Marsh and a popular golf course. A
military museum is ablaze with colourful uniforms representing over 100 years of
military fashion, as well as weapons, memorabilia, tanks and vehicles.
The waterfront is a popular meeting and recreation place for locals, and the
Marina provides overnight docking for visitors.
Employment
CFB Gagetown employs over 4,000 people (3,300 military, 900 civilian) in many
different jobs - everything from recruiting to secretarial to fitness
instructors. It is the largest employer in the Oromocto area. Other employers
include the Oromocto Public Hospital, School District #17, Canex, NPF, and the
Town of Oromocto. Combined, these organizations employ over eight hundred
people. Should you be looking for other areas of professional employment,
Fredericton is only a twenty-two kilometre drive from Oromocto.
