Health Care Facilities and Centres

River Valley Health is the largest geographic health region in the province of New Brunswick, delivering care at 19 separate facilities located in a geographic area that exceeds 23,000 square kilometres. Services are provided at the regional hospital, four community hospitals, nine health centres, three specialty units and through an active Extra-Mural Program that delivers hospital care in the home.

Regional and Community Hospitals

The Regional Hospital
The Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital is the regional referral centre for the most complex cases in the region. This 314-bed facility offers a full range of specialized (secondary, elevated secondary and tertiary care) services, as well as dedicated family practice, surgical, palliative care and geriatric units, an active emergency department, and a high volume ambulatory care program.

Community Hospitals
River Valley Health community hospitals are located in four townships. These sites provide inpatient care as well as a more significant level of diagnostic and therapeutic services than delivered in the health services centres. All facilities offer primary care and, depending on the location, general surgical services and select specialized surgical services.

Health Centres

Health services centres in River Valley Health provide primary care in rural areas and are able to link to larger health care facilities if required. Some health services centres have a small number of beds for holding and observation purposes. All centres provide referral, diagnostic, ambulatory care and some therapeutic services.

These health services centres focus on disease prevention, wellness promotion and case management of chronic conditions, such as asthma, diabetes and hypertension. A number of educational programs are available, such as smoking cessation, weight and cholesterol monitoring clinics, osteoporosis clinics, menopause workshops, foot care clinics, and a variety of clinics to support mothers and newborns.
