meet the highest standard in making your personal information private

In
New Brunswick your privacy is protected by law. The Protection of
Personal Information Act requires that all Regional Health Authorities
follow this standard when dealing with your personal information.
Why do we need your personal information?
River Valley Health will collect information directly from you or from someone on your behalf, so that we can
- properly identify you
- communicate your health information to the appropriate team members who are caring for you
- provide health services to you, and
- meet government requirements.

When do we share your personal information?
River Valley Health will
- collect, use or make known only the personal information that is necessary for your care and treatment
- obtain permission from you before information is shared with third
parties (such as insurance companies), and
- when required by law, share information for the protection of public
safety (such as reporting of communicable diseases).

How do we protect your personal information?
River
Valley Health uses a number of safeguards that protect the
confidentiality of personal information and the privacy of individuals.
Staff, physicians, students, clergy and volunteers are required to sign a pledge of confidentiality.
We have very specific policies and procedures to follow when accessing and releasing information. These are strictly enforced.
Health care professionals are bound by their professional code of ethics to maintain confidentiality.
Regular checks are performed to be sure there is appropriate access to and use of personal information.
We
have specific policies and procedures to protect the security of
personal information (e.g. password protection, virus detection, and
use of identification badges).
Privacy training programs have been developed for staff.

How can you review and correct your personal information?
River Valley Health will
- make every effort to ensure that your information is accurate and complete
- respect your right to access your personal information, and
- recognize your right to request a correction when you believe there is an error or omission.
River Valley Health is
responsible for making sure your information is used appropriately
- open to questions regarding the collection, storage and sharing of your personal information
- committed to investigating all complaints of a security or privacy breach, and
- taking disciplinary or other needed action when required.
