Paediatric Team
What is the Paediatric Team?
The Paediatric Team is an interdisciplinary team that includes the child's
family and caregivers. The goal of the team is to help the child develop in the
areas of communication, mobility, daily living skills and overall health. A
child may have hereditary and acquired neurological and muscular disorders. This
includes:
- cerebral palsy
- muscular dystrophy
- spina bifida
- severe developmental delay
- feeding and swallowing disorders
- spinal cord injury
- traumatic brain injury
The process includes getting the history of the child's
disability, observation, assessment, intervention, and a meeting of the team
members to establish goals that will address the referral problems. The goals
are discussed with parents and professionals in a meeting and the
recommendations are compiled in a report.
How are clients referred to the Paediatric Team?
Referrals
are often initiated by other professionals in rehabilitation or education and
are presented at a paediatric team intake conference. Depending on the
complexity of the problem, an appointment will be made that can last anywhere
from 1-to-5 days. The intervention may be specific to one specialty, or it may
involve several team members, or the entire team. In addition to the parents,
primary-and secondary-care professionals and educators are encouraged to attend.
