There are a number of specialty clinics offered at SCCR including:
Muscular Dystrophy Clinic
Spina Bifida Clinic
Orthotic Clinic
Neuromuscular Clinic
Adolescent Independence Program
Rehabilitation Engineering Clinic
Muscular Dystrophy Clinic: This
is the only muscular dystrophy clinic in Atlantic Canada to
offer an interdisciplinary focus on patient function. It
identifies current medical, emotional and social barriers to
daily living and recommends ways to remove them. The clinic
also anticipates future difficulties, provides information
and helps obtain specialized equipment.
Referrals to the clinic come from around New Brunswick.
A case manager is assigned to each referral. They contact
parents and professionals for information that needs to be
reviewed. Based on this review, appropriate SCCR staff is
assigned to meet with the patient and parents. Team members
assess the patient's status and needs and they pass on their
assessment to the staff member involved. After staff meet
with the patient, they share and coordinate information
before presenting their recommendations to the patient and
parents. A date for a follow-up visit is assigned and a
detailed report is sent to authorized recipients.

Spina Bifida Clinic: This clinic
operates almost the same way as the muscular dystrophy
clinic. It is also the only Spina Bifida clinic in Atlantic
Canada with an interdisciplinary focus on function.

Orthotic Clinic: Referrals to
this paediatric specialty clinic are reviewed by physiatry,
physiotherapy and a consultant orthotist. They combine their
professional skills to assess the need for and proceed to
acquire, manufacture, modify and fit orthotic aids of all
kinds.

Neuromuscular Clinic: This
clinic is part of a continuum of care for clients with
Multiple Sclerosis, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, and other
neuromuscular disorders. It includes outpatient and
inpatient evaluation and treatment. Upon referral to the
Clinic, the inter-disciplinary intake group reviews the
information and acquires additional information as
necessary. Individuals are matched to the most appropriate
evaluation, which may include individual outpatient
assessment, review through the Clinic or possible inpatient
admission.

Adolescent Independence Program:
This residential 4-week program enhances the autonomy,
self-care, and emotional well being of adolescents.
Participants are selected if they meet medical and
functional criteria that indicate the need for and probable
benefit from the program. Issues addressed include
transfers, self-catheterization, communication, self-esteem
and self-care issues in general.

Rehabilitation Engineering Clinic:
The SCCR houses the only such clinic in Atlantic Canada. The
Clinic was developed to meet needs that were beyond the
expertise of our Assistive Technology Services and the
clinic benefits from the strong cooperative working
relationship between SCCR and the Institute of Bio-Medical
Engineering (IBME) at UNB.
